RIP Chuck Berry 1926-2017

The death of Chuck Berry brings to a close the gritty, formative era of rock’n’roll. He didn’t invent the musical genre, but he most certainly gave it definition in the 1950s and helped it become a worldwide phenomenon.

Here is Chuck as we prefer to remember him — fronting a small, largely unknown ’50s combo live in 1958. We’ll let others share his appearances with the Stones and other later rock icons.
